NRV Check Valve – Flow Control in One Direction Explained

NRV Check Valve – Flow Control in One Direction Explained

NRV Check Valve – Flow Control in One Direction Explained

An NRV check valve, or Non-Return Valve, is a type of valve used in piping systems to allow flow in one direction and block reverse flow. This ensures fluid or gas flows efficiently without contamination, damage, or system disruption caused by backflow. NRVs are essential in water supply, irrigation, industrial processing, and boiler applications.

How Does an NRV Check Valve Work?

When pressure from the inlet side exceeds that on the outlet, the NRV opens, allowing flow. When the pressure drops or reverses, the valve automatically closes using gravity or a spring mechanism, preventing reverse flow. This function protects pumps, tanks, and pipelines from water hammer, contamination, and pressure surges.

Common Types of NRV Valves

  • Lift Type NRV: Used in horizontal pipelines, disc lifts under flow and shuts on reversal.
  • Swing Type NRV: Has a swinging disc or flap, ideal for large pipelines with low pressure drop.
  • Ball NRV: Uses a solid ball for flow control; works well in viscous or dirty fluids.
  • Spring Loaded NRV: Fast-acting and compact; used in vertical pipelines.
  • Wafer Type NRV: Thin and lightweight valve fitted between flanges for space-saving systems.
